Phone battery dying: a plan for the last few percent

Three percent is not a reason to close apps at random. First preserve what you need to continue your journey: communication, an address, a ticket or a payment method.

Take a screenshot of the address, ticket or QR code if the app permits offline display. Tell the person waiting for you where you are or when you expect to arrive.

Then enable low-power mode. The screen, navigation, video calls and a weak cellular signal are usually the largest remaining drains.

01—04

Action plan

  1. 01

Lower brightness and disable always-on display, vibration and unnecessary background refresh.

  2. 02

Stop video, games and navigation once you know the route.

  3. 03

In a very weak signal area, use airplane mode temporarily unless you are waiting for an important call.

  4. 04

Use a sound cable and trusted adapter; in public, prefer a normal power socket to an unknown USB port.

Karmic adjustment

The karmic protocol is to notice the battery level early instead of blaming the calendar, the weather or the owner of the nearest outlet.

What not to do

Do not charge a device that is swollen or overheating. Avoid unlocking a phone while it is connected to an unknown USB station; use power-only charging.

Q/A

Common questions

What saves the most power quickly?

Lowering screen brightness and stopping navigation, video and heavy data transfer usually make the biggest difference.

Can I use the phone while it charges?

Yes, if the device and charger are sound and the phone is not overheating, though charging will be slower.

When should the battery be replaced?

Seek an authorised repair service if the phone shuts down suddenly, the battery swells or usable battery life has become unacceptable.
